SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — West Avenue Pizzeria is giving back to the community after a loyal customer got a tattoo of the shop’s new logo. The pizzeria will donate proceeds from sales of the customer’s favorite pizza to the charity of his choice.
Mario Cardenas, the owner of West Avenue Pizzeria, worked with tattoo artist Travis John to design a unique logo for their pizza boxes. Cardenas wanted a fresh take on the traditional pizza box look, which often features a chef and phrases like “hot and delicious.”
John created a design showing Cardenas tossing a pizza, with his tattoos visible. The design was inspired by a photo of Cardenas holding his son. Cardenas shared the logo on the pizzeria’s Instagram account.
“The response was incredible,” Cardenas said. “We decided to do a giveaway.”
Among the three winners, Jon Korniak, a dedicated customer of West Avenue Pizza, stood out. While the other winners chose $100 gift cards and t-shirts, Korniak opted for $100 toward a tattoo from Travis.
“I’m kind of laid back about tattoos,” Korniak said. He ultimately decided to get the pizza box design that he had won in the giveaway.
“I wasn’t expecting it,” John said. “I was surprised and excited to do it.”
Cardenas expressed his gratitude, saying he feels honored that Korniak has a bright red tattoo of the logo on his calf.
“He gave us more than we expected,” Cardenas said. “So I wanted to do something special for Jon.”
As a tribute, Cardenas is adding a new pizza to the menu named after Korniak. The pizza will feature his favorite toppings: chicken parm, hot honey, and ricotta cheese. On October 1, sales from this special pizza will go to the Logan Strong Foundation, a charity that supports children undergoing treatment both in and out of the hospital.
