A couple who got engaged after meeting on a delayed cruise has revealed their matching tattoos, reflecting on their time spent together “marooned” in Northern Ireland for four months.
The Villa Vie Odyssey cruise, which aims to set sail this week, has kept its guests exploring the region instead of their planned voyage. Passengers could rent rooms for 35 to 120 days or purchase villas priced between £90,000 and £260,000. Owning a villa guarantees a room for at least 15 years, valid for the ship’s operational duration.
The cruise’s launch was postponed for four months due to unexpected repairs, leaving it stranded in Belfast. Gian Perroni from Vancouver and Angie Harsanyi from Colorado first met on the ship four months ago and quickly fell in love. They now sport matching trinity knot tattoos to commemorate their time together.
Perroni expressed that they are “made for each other,” stating, “We found our soulmates.” The couple recently announced their engagement following a proposal on the Lagan Weir Bridge during a supermoon. Harsanyi declared, “I can’t imagine spending another day of my life without him.”
Reflecting on their unexpected stay in Northern Ireland, Perroni humorously remarked, “I don’t think we’d consider it stranded as much as… marooned.” He praised the Villa Vie Residences company for their diligence in ensuring the vessel’s safety and covering passenger expenses during the extended stay.
The couple has enjoyed exploring Belfast, with Harsanyi calling the visit “absolutely lovely.” They appreciate the local culture, pubs, and nature, with Perroni, who is half Irish, noting their travels to destinations like the Giant’s Causeway. “I don’t think we could have picked a better place to end up,” he said, adding, “my liver is crying a little bit” from their pub visits.
As they await the cruise’s community outreach program around the world, Perroni, who spent six years in Costa Rica, is excited about the opportunity to work on board while traveling. The ship’s captain will officiate their wedding in April between Costa Rica and Panama.
Florida native Holly Hennessy, also waiting to board, shared that passengers were informed the ship has passed all certifications. Reflecting on her time in Belfast, she said, “What you lack in warmth of temperature, the people make up for. It has been a remarkable experience.”
Despite the delays, she believes the cruise will be “worth the wait,” having invested $329,000 (£275,000) in her balcony mini-suite. “When I see her (the Odyssey), my heart goes pitter-patter,” she added, expressing her affection for the ship.
Hennessy described the experience on board as an “actual community,” accompanied by her pet cat, Captain “the cruising kitty.” The Siamese cat, accustomed to life on deck, has made friends around Belfast, even receiving an invitation to the Lord Mayor’s office.
Grateful for the support of local hotels accommodating pets, Hennessy stated, “I’m abundantly grateful for what could have been a much worse situation.” As part of their farewell to Belfast, she and her shipmates plan to rent three “beer bikes” for a grand send-off.
