Neville Brothers Discuss Body Art During Fan Interaction
Gary Neville recently found himself the target of light-hearted mockery from his brother Phil and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher after sharing his thoughts on getting his first tattoo.
The conversation began when Neville learned that Phil had recently gotten a tattoo to commemorate Manchester United’s treble-winning season in 1999. The Neville family had traditionally been against tattoos, but Phil was inspired after encountering a tattoo artist at David Beckham’s Miami apartment.
Phil explained on an episode of The Overlap US, “The best time of my career was 1999, without doubt. I got a ‘1999’ tattoo on my arm because it was the best time of my life. It took me about a year to tell my mum, and I obviously didn’t tell Gary.”
Gary looked surprised by this revelation and was asked if he might also consider getting inked after seeing Phil’s tattoo. “I haven’t got any tattoos,” he admitted. “Do you think I should go and get one? If I ever got a tattoo, I was thinking about a lion on one shoulder and a devil on the other. The lion for the Three Lions and England, and the devil for Manchester United.”
His suggestion prompted laughter from Phil and Carragher. Phil grimaced and said, “Oh no, that’s cheap.” Gary, slightly offended, replied, “Is it?! More so than a number on my arm?”
Carragher chimed in, asserting, “Phil’s is better. It’s more understated.”
The Neville brothers were key players in Manchester United’s historic treble in 1999, a feat only matched again by Manchester City in 2023. However, United has struggled in recent years, failing to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013 and finishing eighth last season.
