Jersey’s First International Tattoo Event to Showcase Local Talent

by Jessica

Tattoo enthusiasts from across the globe will gather in Jersey this weekend for the island’s first-ever international tattoo convention. The event, spearheaded by Ash Lewis, a full-time tattooist and owner of Unit 3 Tattoo Studio at Five Oaks, is set to take place at the Grand Jersey Hotel. It will run from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, and Sunday, September 22.

However, Lewis wants the convention to be more than just a tattoo gathering. To enhance the experience, the neighboring Victoria Park will feature an array of food and drink vendors, bouncy castles, face painting, and more activities designed to engage people of all ages.

Billed as a “celebration of art,” the convention will spotlight around 30 tattoo artists, both local and international. Artists will come from nearby locations like Guernsey, as well as from further afield in Norway, Canada, and Ireland. This eclectic mix ensures a diverse range of tattoo styles and techniques for attendees to witness.

Whether you have tattoos or are simply curious, all Islanders are encouraged to attend and watch live tattooing throughout the day. It’s an opportunity to appreciate the craft and artistry behind the ink.

In addition to the live tattooing, an awards ceremony will take place each evening, recognizing the tattoos completed at the convention. After the awards, live music performances will entertain attendees, featuring local artists such as Louis G, Lee Jackson Downie, and bands like The Dust and Claymore.

For a £10 entry fee, visitors can also enjoy other attractions such as art exhibits, pop-up barbershops, body piercing studios, and various activities suited to all age groups. Children under 16 can attend for free, making it a family-friendly event.

The tattoo industry in Jersey has experienced significant growth over the past decade. Where only a few shops existed years ago, nearly ten studios now call the island home. According to Lewis, Jersey is now rich with talent, not only in tattoo artistry but in other art forms as well.

“We wanted this convention to serve as a platform for local artists to showcase their work,” Lewis said. “From Abbie Overland’s beautiful art pieces to hand-made jewelry by Hannah Orr, there’s something for everyone.”

Organizing the event has been a monumental task, and Lewis expressed his gratitude to everyone involved. He also highlighted the support from small businesses and local charities, which contributed their services to ensure the success of the event.

“We’re aiming to make this event the best it can be,” Lewis added. “Next year, we hope to have even more local sponsors onboard because this is such a unique and valuable art event for the community.”

Jersey’s first tattoo convention promises not only to be an exciting event for tattoo lovers but also a celebration of local talent and creativity in various forms of art.
