Anthony Richardson’s Back Tattoo Tells a Story as Colts Prepare for 2024 Season

by Jessica

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, now in his second year, is drawing attention both on and off the field. The 22-year-old, who had a challenging rookie season due to injuries, has fans and analysts eager to see what he brings to the team this year. Despite limited playing time last season, Richardson’s dual-threat ability as a passer and runner, combined with the presence of standout running back Jonathan Taylor, has Colts head coach Shane Steichen crafting a game plan that could give opposing defenses a headache. However, questions remain about Richardson’s durability and his historically low completion percentage.

As the Colts gear up for a new season, they’re determined to make a playoff push, with a healthy Richardson leading the charge.

Richardson’s Back Tattoo: A Canvas of Symbols

During the offseason, Richardson made headlines not just for his on-field potential but also for his striking new back tattoo. The intricate design is a bold statement, featuring his last name, the NFL logo, four aces, a roulette wheel, dice, a lion, a cross, and Spartan warriors. The detailed artwork took seven hours to complete, with Richardson opting to undergo sedation during the process.

The young quarterback, who’s been getting tattoos since he was 13, shrugged off any criticism for choosing sedation, saying, “I’ve done my time there.” He also hinted at future ink, reserving space for a Lombardi trophy tattoo, which he plans to get when the Colts win the Super Bowl.

Richardson’s first tattoo was a set of praying hands, done by his uncle, who is a tattoo artist, in his living room.

A Journey of Faith and Family

Richardson’s story is one of perseverance and faith, deeply rooted in his close relationship with his mother, LaShawnda Cleare. When Richardson was just five years old, he and Cleare moved frequently, seeking safe places to stay. Each night, they ended their day with prayer, and young Anthony made a special request: “God, let my mama have a baby.”

Within a year, Cleare gave birth to Anthony’s younger brother, Corey. From the moment Corey came home from the hospital, Anthony took on the role of protector. He would meet visitors at the door, insisting they sanitize their hands before touching his baby brother.

Richardson’s athletic talent was evident early on. In fourth grade, during a school skills competition, he stunned everyone by throwing a football so far that a golf cart was needed to retrieve it. Even as a 10-year-old, Richardson displayed a drive that foreshadowed his future success.

Despite facing hardships, Cleare remained committed to providing a stable environment for her sons. After initially being denied Section 8 housing in Gainesville, she received an unexpected call the following week, offering her an apartment. Cleare attributes this turn of events to her faith, saying, “It was me following God.”

As Richardson prepares for what could be a breakout season, his journey from a young boy with big dreams to the starting quarterback of the Colts is a testament to his resilience, determination, and the strong support system that has guided him along the way.
