Social Media May Contribute to Tattoo Regret Among Gen Z

by Jessica

SALT LAKE CITY — Members of Gen Z are increasingly reporting tattoo regret. One tattoo artist told USA Today that social media and rapidly changing trends could be to blame.

According to the Pew Research Center, 32% of Americans have at least one tattoo, and 22% of them have more than one. However, 24% of those with tattoos regret at least one of them.

Understanding Tattoo Regret: Insights from an Artist

Gabs Miceli, a tattoo artist based in Brooklyn, New York, discussed tattoo regret with USA Today. Miceli categorized the regret into two types: “immediate regret” and regret that surfaces over time. She noted that many people are now getting “impulse tattoos.” Patchwork tattoos, or collections of mismatched designs, have become popular among influencers in the past five years.

Miceli explained that tattoos based on current trends are more likely to lead to regret as styles change, especially if they are not well thought out. She also suggested that social media amplifies the perception of tattoo regret, as people widely share their experiences online, making regret seem more prevalent than it might be.

Additionally, USA Today reported that changing perceptions and stigmas can influence tattoo regret. While society is generally more accepting of tattoos today, some industries remain less welcoming of them in the workplace.

Reasons to Avoid Tattoos

Tattoo decisions are personal. Dave Noriega and guest host Adam Gardner from the Dave & Dujanovic show shared their reasons for avoiding tattoos. Gardner mentioned he feared future regret and couldn’t decide on a design he would love forever. Noriega echoed similar sentiments, adding concerns about how tattoos would age as the body changes over time.

Ink Nurse explained that tattoos age along with the body. As the skin ages and pigments break down, tattoos can fade and stretch.

Tips to Avoid Tattoo Regret

While some tattoo regret is unavoidable, planning and preparation can help. Sleight of Hand Tattoo, a shop in Vancouver, British Columbia, offered several tips to avoid regret:

1. Choose the Right Style and Subject: Select something meaningful to you and avoid trendy styles unless they resonate with you personally.

2. Research Artists: Familiarize yourself with different artists, their portfolios, and styles. Check their reviews and the reputation of their shops. Reputable artists maintain clean workspaces, wear gloves, and use disposable needles.

3. Consider Placement: Choose a tattoo placement that will age well and won’t complicate your life. Consult with experienced artists about your desired placement, as they can suggest better locations.

4. Follow Aftercare Instructions: Mystic Owl Tattoo in Marietta, Georgia, emphasized the importance of following aftercare instructions. Keep your tattoo moisturized and protected from sun exposure, as sunburns can accelerate the aging process.

By carefully considering these factors, individuals can reduce the likelihood of experiencing tattoo regret.
