Local artists Jess Claflin, Isis Myers, and Anne Labossiere are eager to make an impact in Steamboat Springs with their new venture, Black Rabbit Tattoo, which opened in June.
“The former business owner wanted to return to the East Coast,” Claflin explained. “We love our colleagues, our location, and everything about this. So, we decided to create a communal art space with people we already know.”
On Monday, the three women sat in their studio at 701 Yampa St., above E3 Chophouse, expressing their excitement about their business and craft. The sale was finalized earlier this spring, making Black Rabbit Tattoo a new addition to Yampa Street.
“I’ve always been fascinated by tattoo culture,” Labossiere said. “Expressing yourself outwardly is one of the greatest things we can do. I love seeing people’s happiness when they get a tattoo, whether it’s covering a scar or a memorial piece for a loved one.”
For Myers, owning a tattoo studio is a chance to express her art and bring joy to others. “This is my opportunity to be creative and make art for people,” she said. “Tattoos can help people feel more comfortable in their bodies and excited about changes in themselves.”
Both Myers and Labossiere grew up in Steamboat Springs and take pride in running a business in their hometown. Claflin, who moved to the area a few years ago, has also developed strong ties to the Yampa Valley.
All three artists previously worked at Mind’s Eye Tattoo before purchasing it and are now excited to run their own business.
“We want more community involvement,” Claflin said. “We plan to hold ‘flash days’ to benefit the Routt County Humane Society, Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation, and other community organizations. We want to be more engaged with the community.”
The new owners invite the public to their grand opening from 3-7 p.m. this Saturday at Black Rabbit Tattoo. The event will feature a raffle for a $600 tattoo, with tickets available for $10. The drawing will take place at 6:30 p.m., and the winner must be present to claim the prize.
Representatives from the Routt County Humane Society and Born Free Wildlife Rehabilitation will be at the event, along with Maria from Magic Color, Breckenwitch, and Best Kept Secret Exotic Piercing.
Black Rabbit Tattoo is open for walk-ins from noon to 7 p.m. Friday through Monday.
