A 22-year-old woman has launched a tattoo business in Bournemouth, focusing on supporting clients with their mental health.
Caitlin Batcheldor, the owner of Asylum Artistry on Ringwood Road, has received numerous requests since opening her studio.
Caitlin has always been passionate about art, beginning her journey by selling drawings. “I’ve had the name Asylum Artistry for as long as I can remember because I started selling my artwork and doing commissions,” she said.
Her art is known for its horror and creepy themes, which inspired the name “art for the insane.” However, Caitlin offers a variety of styles to cater to different tastes. “Asylum Artistry represents uneasy art and emotional artwork,” she explained.
Since opening at the end of April 2024, Caitlin experienced a significant moment when she tattooed a woman battling cancer. The woman and her family all got matching tattoos that read “rebellious hope” in support of her fight against the disease. “It was an honor for them to ask me to do this tattoo for them,” Caitlin said.
Caitlin’s personal experiences with physical and mental health issues have fueled her passion for art. She has ulcerative colitis, a digestive condition that can be debilitating. Being her own boss allows her to manage her condition by setting her own hours.
To celebrate her opening, Caitlin offered bottomless tattoos, which was a huge success. “I got a little bit emotional because I just couldn’t believe how much positive support I was getting. It was overwhelming and really, really nice,” she shared.
Looking ahead, Caitlin plans to train in scar pigmentation to help clients boost their confidence. She also aims to certify in semi-permanent makeup and launch her own art merchandise in the future.
