5th Annual Tattoo You Midwest Convention Draws Artists and Enthusiasts to Walker

by Jessica

Walker, MN – The Northern Lights Casino in Walker is abuzz with creativity as it plays host to the fifth installment of the Tattoo You Midwest convention. Spanning the weekend, this event has become a cornerstone for tattoo enthusiasts and artists alike, drawing talent from across the Midwest region.

Originally conceived as a celebration of artistry and community, the convention has evolved into a platform where artists can showcase their skills while forging connections with potential clients and fellow craftsmen. David Nelson, the convention’s promoter, reflects on its evolution, stating, “It started out as a reason for me to party, but we got into it. I really made a commitment for this to be well-intended, very hygienic, and very reputable.”

For artists like Shannon Thompson of The Art of Ink Studio in New London, Minnesota, and Justin Jimenez of Electric Blue Tattoo Co. from Forest Lake, participation in the convention offers invaluable networking opportunities. “As an artist, you know, it’s crucial to put yourself out there, and this is one of those ways that you can do that,” Jimenez remarks, emphasizing the significance of face-to-face interactions with potential clientele.

The convention isn’t just about showcasing existing talent but also nurturing creativity through competition. Throughout the weekend, artists engage in friendly rivalry, vying for recognition in a multitude of categories. David Nelson elaborates, “We have two huge contests…27 different categories where we break it up.” These competitions not only add excitement to the event but also provide a platform for artists to push their boundaries and showcase their finest work.

Moreover, the convention isn’t confined to the tattoo artists alone; attendees have the opportunity to engage with live entertainment. Local blues band Corey Medina and Brothers, hailing from Bemidji, will be gracing the stage on Saturday, adding another layer of vibrancy to the event.

Despite its smaller-town setting, Walker holds a special allure for the convention’s organizers and participants alike. Skyler Nelson, Host of the Tattoo You Midwest Convention, remarks on the town’s intimate atmosphere, stating, “We always like coming up to this casino to do our convention year ’cause it’s very kind of [a] personable town.”

The convention is open to all enthusiasts, with weekend passes starting at $20. Doors open at 9 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, promising a weekend filled with creativity, camaraderie, and, of course, extraordinary tattoos.
