The Singaporean Collective Redefining Tattoo, Fashion, and Art

by Jessica

Crevice, short for Creation as Vice, is a dynamic, youth-driven tattoo collective from Singapore, pushing boundaries and challenging conventional norms in tattoo art, fashion, and design. Founded in 2021, the collective is composed of four creative friends—23-year-old ceramic artist Samantha, 23-year-old model and artist Tristen, 22-year-old model and creative Martina, and 24-year-old painter and movement artist Qowomo. Known for their raw, organic creations that draw inspiration from goth and occult themes, Crevice is set on disrupting the status quo in both ideological and aesthetic spheres.

“Crevice is fueled by raw impulse and a celebration of excess; we look to challenge both ideological and aesthetic norms through our practice,” the group shares. Their work reflects this fearless approach, embracing a mix of bold expression and unconventional beauty.

From Small Beginnings to Creative Hub

Operating out of a studio located in the vibrant creative space of Pearl’s Hill Terrace, Crevice began as a partnership between Qowomo and Martina. “We were already doing interesting handpoke tattoos in 2020 and were looking for a space to call ours,” recalls Qowomo. After two years of working in a smaller unit, the duo moved to their current location when Samantha and Tristen joined. “The space is magic; it takes care of us, and we take care of it,” Qowomo reflects.

Collaborations and Community Engagement

Since its inception, Crevice has collaborated with various local creatives, including the subculture-inspired fashion label Lasik and the weekend art market Labour Block. The collective also participates in communal tattoo events, like last year’s Halloween-themed flash party hosted by underground music collective Strange Weather. “All these collaborations have been so robust; each was memorable in its own way and always a great time,” the group adds.

Tattoo and Fashion: An Interdisciplinary Relationship

Crevice members emphasize the deep, interconnected relationship between tattoo art and fashion. “Tattoo and fashion have long been interdisciplinary,” says Samantha. “Being able to dress the body, whether through ink or materials, is an extension of one’s individualism and marks different times and periods of one’s existence, whether permanent or not.”

Tristen highlights the ritualistic and spiritual nature of tattooing, explaining that it often goes far beyond the experience of purchasing clothing. “I love the world-building element of tattooing, working with my clients from the initial sketches to the final product,” he says, illustrating the deeper connection between the art of tattooing and personal expression.

A Collective Driven by Curiosity and Initiative

The group remains focused on growth and innovation, motivated by a constant curiosity about the world around them. “Just like particles that bounce within a room, we are always moving with initiative and responsiveness,” the collective says. “This belief underlines all the moves we make, whether it be in Singapore or around the region. We wish to shift the currents, think outside the box, and remain relentless in all that drives us.”

With their unconventional approach to tattooing, fashion, and art, Crevice is not just creating tattoos—they’re building a movement, one that celebrates individuality and pushes the boundaries of creative expression.
