Kinosaki Onsen, a small hot spring town in Japan known for its tattoo-friendly policy, is seeing a significant increase in American tourists, according to recent data. A visitor survey conducted from October 2024 to March 2025 revealed that Americans accounted for the largest share of international tourists, with 19.6% of visitors coming from the United States. The second-largest group of visitors came from Taiwan, with a share of 16.6%.
The growing popularity of Kinosaki Onsen among American tourists has raised questions about its appeal. Many visitors cited the town’s welcoming stance toward tattoos as a key factor in their decision to visit. While most hot spring resorts in Japan have policies prohibiting tattoos, Kinosaki Onsen has long embraced tattooed guests, allowing them to bathe in its seven public hot springs without issue.
Founded over 1,300 years ago, Kinosaki Onsen offers more than just hot springs. The town is also known for its traditional inns, gourmet Tajima Beef (a local variety of Kobe Beef), and fresh seafood. Direct train services from Kyoto and Osaka make it easily accessible for tourists.
As American visitors continue to make up a growing share of the town’s international tourism, Kinosaki Onsen’s reputation as a tattoo-friendly destination is positioning it as a must-visit spot for travelers seeking an authentic Japanese hot spring experience.
