Drew Barrymore turned her talk show into a tattoo parlor on Tuesday, marking an emotional moment as she got a new tattoo in honor of a special fan connection. The 50-year-old actress, joined by her guest Savannah Guthrie, 53, both received tattoos that held deep personal significance.
“I wanted to get a tattoo, and I just met someone I’ve been waiting to meet,” Barrymore explained before the inking began. She shared that the tattoo’s inspiration came from a fan named Jack Ciapciak, who had recently lost his partner. In tribute, Ciapciak had inscribed a quote from Barrymore’s 1999 film Never Been Kissed on a bench dedicated to his late partner, Jack Lorentzen. The quote, “Find out who you are, and try not to be afraid of it,” became a poignant reminder of their bond.
Barrymore met Ciapciak during a recent taping of her show, where he shared the story behind his tribute. The emotional exchange led Barrymore to decide on a tattoo herself — the word “time.” Reflecting on the story, she explained, “The way you speak about Jack made me feel like the tattoo I want to get today is so fitting and meant to be.” She elaborated, saying, “Time is our most precious commodity, so I feel so grateful to get signs from whatever it is that gives you faith.”
As Barrymore settled into the chair for her tattoo, she continued her interview with Guthrie about the latter’s new children’s book, Mostly What God Does is Love You. So engrossed in their conversation, Barrymore didn’t even notice when her tattoo was finished. “Oh my God, I haven’t even looked at it by the way,” she said, beaming as she gazed at the ink on her wrist. “Uh, I love it. Thank God. I love it!”
Guthrie, too, got a meaningful tattoo during the episode — two hearts drawn by her children, Vale and Charley. She playfully shared, “I told my daughter, I’m like, ‘Oh, I want you guys to draw little hearts and I’m gonna get it tattooed,’ and she’s like, ‘Mommy, every time you see Miss Drew, you get a tattoo.’” Guthrie laughed, adding, “I’m like, not every time!”
It wasn’t the first time Barrymore had joined Guthrie for a tattoo. The Today host had previously gotten her first tattoo — the words “all my love,” from a love letter written by her late father to her mother. Barrymore accompanied her friend during that session as well, getting a tattoo of three sardines symbolizing herself and her two daughters, Frankie and Olive.
This special tattoo moment highlights the deep emotional connections that tattoos can represent, making for an unforgettable episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
