Craig Melvin is learning a valuable lesson about betting after finding himself with a tattoo of his Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s face on the back of his neck.
The wager was simple: Melvin, a fan of the Washington Commanders, bet that his team would defeat Guthrie’s Philadelphia Eagles. When the Eagles triumphed 55-24 in the NFC Championship game on January 26, Melvin had to honor his side of the bet.
On January 27, Melvin joked, “This is why we don’t gamble, kids!” as he prepared for the tattoo application on Today with help from Carson Daly and Al Roker. Fortunately for Melvin, the tattoo was temporary, though Daly humorously warned that these fake tattoos can last longer than expected. “My 10-year-old daughter wore one of these fake tattoos, and we couldn’t get it off for six months,” he quipped. “So, Craig, if you’re at tubby time tonight and this doesn’t come off easily, don’t worry.”
The tattoo, featuring Guthrie’s face, earned her approval. “Oh my God, it looks so good, Craig,” she said as she held up an Eagles logo and wore an Eagles winter cap. Melvin joked in return, “I wish I could see it,” to which Guthrie replied, “Don’t worry, you’ll see it on TV!”
In addition to the tattoo, Melvin received an Eagles jersey with Saquon Barkley’s name on the back. Barkley played a key role in the Eagles’ victory by scoring the third touchdown in the game.
As for the Super Bowl, the Eagles are set to face the Kansas City Chiefs on February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The Chiefs previously won the 2023 Super Bowl, and fans are hoping for a different outcome this time.
One thing is certain: Melvin won’t be betting against the Eagles again anytime soon.
