In October 2023, Crystal Dawn opened Cry Later Tattoo with a mission that goes beyond just tattoos. While the studio offers custom tattoos, permanent cosmetics, tooth gems, and plans to introduce permanent jewelry, its core purpose is to create a safe and supportive environment for women in the tattoo industry.
Originally from West Virginia and having spent part of her teenage years in Chicago, Dawn has called Owensboro home for most of her life. She has been immersed in the tattoo world for nearly a decade, beginning her apprenticeship at 18. However, her early experiences in the industry were far from easy.
“I was abused a lot, and at the time, I didn’t know any better. I thought that’s just what you had to deal with as a woman in the industry,” Dawn shared. “As I got older, I realized that shouldn’t be the case. I don’t want that to happen to anybody else.”
Determined to create change, Dawn established Cry Later Tattoo to be a haven for female artists. Though the shop, located at 617 West Parrish Avenue, is open to all clients, approximately 85% of its clientele are women.
Looking toward the future, Dawn plans to either open a second location or move to a larger space by the end of the year. She also envisions expanding the studio’s offerings to include nail technicians and estheticians, ultimately making Cry Later Tattoo a one-stop destination for beauty and wellness services tailored to women.
In addition to its regular tattoo services, Cry Later Tattoo offers free 3D areola tattooing for cancer survivors and individuals who have undergone gender-affirming surgeries.
“We provide that at no charge because it’s about helping people feel confident in themselves again,” Dawn explained.
As Cry Later Tattoo continues to grow, Dawn’s focus remains on fostering an environment where both clients and artists feel safe, respected, and empowered.
