Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, one of the most successful and respected figures in college football, has achieved tremendous success both as a coach and a father. His impact on the Colorado Buffaloes and his star players, including Travis Hunter and his son, Shedeur Sanders, has put the team and his family in the national spotlight. Shedeur, a talented quarterback, has received major accolades such as the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which honors the nation’s top quarterback.
However, a resurfaced video reveals a personal disagreement between Deion and Shedeur over a tattoo. The argument took place when Shedeur, playing for Jackson State, expressed his desire to get inked. Deion immediately stepped in, visibly frustrated, urging his son to abandon the idea.
The exchange starts with Shedeur questioning why his father would object to a tattoo, insisting it wouldn’t affect him. Deion, however, responded with advice rooted in his own vision for his son’s future, telling him to focus on his dreams and avoid distractions.
“How are you going to get mad if it’s not affecting you?” Shedeur asked. Deion fired back, “Where does this come from? What is your dream? Keep on that.” The conversation escalated, with Shedeur trying to deflect blame onto the person recording the interaction. Deion, maintaining his stance, continued to press the importance of maintaining focus on his goals and remaining disciplined.
Deion’s tough-love response went further, drawing a comparison to Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of changing the world. He also pointed out that some things, like tattoos, might not align with Shedeur’s aspirations. “Where you are planning on going, some things you can’t take with you,” Deion said.
Despite his father’s disapproval, Shedeur eventually got the tattoo, though the moment was captured on video, adding an awkward tension to the father-son dynamic. When Deion noticed the tattoo after Shedeur’s transfer to Colorado, he was visibly displeased. The two had an uncomfortable exchange about the tattoo, with Deion warning of consequences for his son’s decision.
Despite the tattoo incident, Shedeur continued to excel on the football field, with a stellar performance in the 2024 season. He was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year, a first-team All-Transfer by On3 and The Athletic, and earned All-Pac-12 honorable mention from coaches. He also made the All-NFF Colorado Chapter team and was recognized as Colorado’s newcomer of the year at the school’s CUSPY awards.
While the tattoo debate remains a memorable moment between father and son, Shedeur’s achievements prove that he has remained focused on his goals, both on and off the field.
