Tattoo Art Exhibition at Mansfield Museum: Celebrating History, Art, and Identity

by Jessica

Mansfield Museum is hosting a fascinating new exhibition, Tattooing in the UK – Miners, Misconceptions and His Majesty, which explores the deep-rooted history and cultural significance of tattoos in British society. This free exhibition, running until Saturday, March 29, goes beyond the surface to showcase tattooing as both an art form and a personal journey.

The exhibition was inspired by local tattoo artist Sean Colgrave, who approached the museum after an out-of-hours event called “cocktails with the collection.” Together with museum staff, Colgrave helped shape the display, sourcing exhibits and collaborating with Liverpool Tattoo Museum to feature key items. The exhibition also includes a collection of images taken by Ian Dearman, Development Officer for Digital at the museum, who photographed local people’s tattoos after setting up a pop-up studio in Mansfield’s Four Seasons Shopping Centre.

Sean Colgrave expresses his excitement about the exhibition, stating, “Tattoos are more than just skin deep. They are history, art—and sometimes the best or worst conversation starter at family dinners!” He emphasizes that the exhibition sheds light on the artistry behind tattoos, debunking myths and placing body art in the wider context of fine art. Tattoos, according to Colgrave, are timeless and deserving of admiration just like traditional paintings.

The exhibition explores several themes, including the deep cultural and historical roots of tattoos. It looks at how tattoos have been a part of British working-class life for centuries, particularly for miners, sailors, and soldiers, where they were not just about aesthetics but also survival, identity, and cultural expression. Tattoos have also played a significant role in various cultures worldwide, from the Pacific islands to the Inuit of Canada.
