Authorities have identified the driver behind the explosion of a Tesla Cybertruck outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on Wednesday. The suspect, 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger, an active-duty U.S. Army special operations soldier from Colorado Springs, Colorado, was linked to the incident through a combination of photos from charging stations, a passport, driver’s license, and a distinctive tattoo on his arm, according to police officials.
During a press conference on Thursday, Las Vegas Sheriff Kevin McMahill confirmed that while substantial evidence points to Livelsberger as the individual in the truck at the time of the explosion, the body recovered was too badly burned to make a positive identification through visual means. As of now, authorities have not been able to confirm the identity via DNA or medical records.
The explosion, which occurred around 8:40 a.m. in front of the Trump hotel, resulted in the death of Livelsberger and injuries to seven others. Investigators have since uncovered a range of items that further link Livelsberger to the scene, including a military identification card, a passport, and two firearms—a Desert Eagle .50 caliber semi-automatic pistol and another semi-automatic weapon.
While the investigation is ongoing, the discovery of these key pieces of evidence has played a critical role in narrowing down the suspect’s identity. Further examination and analysis are expected as authorities continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the deadly explosion.
