Femme and Fauna, a woman-owned tattoo parlor in North Olmsted, is carving out a unique space for women in the tattoo industry. Opened in February 2024, the shop offers a welcoming environment where women can feel comfortable getting tattoos while also creating a family-friendly atmosphere.
Owner Lauren Callahan-Sawchik, who began tattooing at just 13 years old, said her goal was to create a safe and inclusive space for families. “I really wanted to create a family-fun atmosphere where kids can get their ears pierced, and women can come to get tattooed and feel super comfortable,” she explained.
Femme and Fauna employs three female tattoo artists, along with two piercers, one of whom specializes in tooth gems and permanent makeup. Callahan-Sawchik, who specializes in black-and-gray realism, emphasized the importance of collaboration within the shop. “We still tattoo anyone who walks through the door, but I like working around other females and just kind of inspiring each other and lifting each other up,” she said.
The tattoo artists at Femme and Fauna bring diverse expertise to the shop, with two others specializing in American traditional tattoos and bold, bright colors.
Callahan-Sawchik’s desire to create Femme and Fauna stemmed from her experiences in a predominantly male-dominated industry. “I’ve been in a very male-dominated industry for so many years and working alongside some scary men, so I wanted to not deal with that anymore,” she shared.
Over the years, the tattoo industry has seen a surge in female artists, a shift that Callahan-Sawchik welcomes. “There are so many more female tattoo artists now than when I started, which I absolutely love,” she said. “I feel like women are definitely taking over.”
Femme and Fauna is located at 27521 Lorain Road in North Olmsted, continuing to inspire and empower women in the tattoo world.
