Laser Scans Unveil 1,200-Year-Old Tattoos on Peruvian Mummies

by Jessica

Recent advances in laser scanning technology have provided archaeologists with an unprecedented look into the ancient art of tattooing, revealing intricate designs on mummies from Peru’s Chancay culture, dating back over 1,200 years. These tattoos, likely created using primitive tools such as cactus needles or sharpened animal bones, offer a glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship of ancient tattoo artists.

Led by Michael Pittman from the Institute of Archaeology at University College London, an international team of researchers became the first to use laser-stimulated fluorescence (LSF) to uncover tattoo art preserved on mummies. This innovative method allowed scientists to examine the designs in unprecedented detail, despite the natural fading and decay that typically obscures such artwork on ancient remains.

The Chancay culture, which flourished along the coast of Peru between 900 and 1533 AD, is renowned for its sophisticated textiles and visual art. The latest study highlights their tattooing practices, revealing designs that reflect both personal and cultural identities of the time.

“Tattoos were a significant form of expression in pre-Hispanic South America,” the study’s authors wrote in their article, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). “Mummified remains with preserved skin decoration offer valuable insights into the cultural symbolism of the period.”

As tattoos naturally fade over time, this cutting-edge technique—LSF—proves to be a game changer. It produces images based on the fluorescence emitted from within the skin, offering a non-invasive method to examine tattoo art, even in cases where traditional methods would fail due to the natural deterioration of the body.

This breakthrough provides an exciting new window into the tattooing practices of ancient civilizations, shedding light on a cultural art form that has long been difficult to study due to the effects of time and decay.
