Miley Cyrus, who appears happier than ever with her current boyfriend Maxx Morando, has a history of high-profile relationships, one of which involved getting a matching tattoo with her ex, Cody Simpson. The two began dating in late 2019, following Cyrus’s divorce from actor Liam Hemsworth. Their romance, although short-lived, included a symbolic gesture of commitment through matching tattoos.
In the early days of their relationship, Cyrus and Simpson opted for different tattoos, but later chose to ink matching designs. The couple, both passionate about tattoos, worked with artist Nico Bassill, who revealed their ink on Instagram in a post that has since been deleted. The tattoos were of tridents, albeit with slight differences in thickness, reflecting their individual personalities. The design appeared to be inspired by Simpson’s poetry book, Prince Neptune: Poetry and Prose, which was released in April 2020. The tattoo caption referenced a line from the book: “’Some mornings it’s like the sun rises only for her,’ Prince Neptune.”
However, despite the permanence of their tattoos, their relationship was not as enduring. In August 2020, only five months after debuting their matching ink, Cyrus and Simpson broke up. The split, which Simpson described as “a mutual decision,” was attributed to their busy careers. Simpson, a competitive swimmer, was focused on his Olympic aspirations, while Cyrus was immersed in the production of her album Plastic Hearts, which was released in November 2020.
Simpson later reflected on the breakup during an interview on The Kyle & Jackie O Show in 2022, explaining that they had simply reached a crossroads in their lives. “We were in different places,” he said, emphasizing there were “no hard feelings” and that they had shared “an amazing year together.”
As for the tattoos, it remains unclear whether Cyrus still has hers. Known for her extensive tattoo collection, which includes over 70 pieces, Cyrus has continued to add to her body art over the years, including a notable “freedom” tattoo following her 2019 divorce from Hemsworth. Despite the end of their relationship, the matching tridents remain a permanent reminder of her time with Simpson.
