The Public Health team of NHS Ayrshire & Arran is urging residents across Ayrshire to be aware of the potential risks involved in getting tattoos and body art. This reminder comes as part of a joint initiative with Environmental Health teams across East, North, and South Ayrshire to raise awareness about the dangers of unlicensed and untrained tattoo artists.
Sally Amor, Public Health Consultant, highlighted the growing popularity of tattoos, particularly among young people, and the importance of ensuring safety when choosing to get one. “Tattoos have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially among younger individuals,” Amor said. “However, there are significant risks involved, especially when the tattoo artist is untrained and unlicensed.”
Tattoos, which involve the injection of pigments or dyes into the skin, can lead to allergic reactions such as redness, itching, and swelling. In more severe cases, they can result in skin infections, which may extend beyond the tattoo site, causing swollen glands and general illness. Additionally, the use of unclean or shared needles heightens the risk of contracting bloodborne viruses, which can lead to life-altering health conditions.
A licensed tattoo artist, by contrast, undergoes the necessary training and possesses the skills to minimize skin trauma and reduce the risk of infection. These professionals follow strict hygiene protocols and provide aftercare guidance to ensure the best possible outcome for their clients.
The legal age for getting a tattoo in the UK is 18. Tattooing minors is not only illegal but can lead to legal consequences for the person performing the procedure, including involvement with the police and Environmental Health authorities.
“We understand that many people, particularly young individuals, may not fully appreciate the risks involved in getting a tattoo,” said Amor. “If you’re thinking about getting a tattoo, make sure you understand the potential risks. Do your research and choose a trained, licensed professional to ensure a safe and positive experience.”
For those considering a tattoo, the message is clear: be informed, choose wisely, and ensure the artist is licensed to ensure your health and safety.
