Burning Bridges, a tattoo shop nestled in downtown Modesto, marked its one-year anniversary with a vibrant celebration featuring flash tattoo services, live music, local vendors, and a raffle awarding two $500 tattoo gift certificates. The event aimed to honor the community that has supported the shop since its inception.
A Tradition of Community Engagement
Owner Woode McCumber, a seasoned tattoo artist with experience dating back to 2007, organized a similar event for Burning Bridges’ grand opening. He emphasized that this anniversary celebration was designed as a gesture of appreciation for the community’s continued support.
Vendors and Unique Offerings
Among the event’s featured vendors was Oracle Blends, a business specializing in plant-based mocktails. Candace Fleming, the owner of Oracle Blends and a repeat client of McCumber’s, expressed excitement at participating. noting that her business has been active for six months. She aspires to open a wellness café that caters to diverse dietary needs.
Fleming’s friend and supporter, Starla Preston, highlighted their shared history in the bartending industry and their journey toward sobriety. “It’s wonderful to see Candace bring her vision to life,” Preston added.
Live Performances and Local Talent
The celebration included performances by a lineup of bands from Sacramento, San Francisco, and local Modesto acts, featuring groups such as Malcriado, Dreamer A.M., V.V.M., Oxy, and Malandro. Merch tables from the bands and other vendors added to the event’s lively atmosphere, offering attendees the chance to purchase unique products and artwork.
Marcos Zaragoza, a California State University, Stanislaus alumnus with a background in Creative Media, attended as the event photographer. A long-time friend of the members of Dreamer A.M., Zaragoza spoke about the fulfillment he finds in documenting shows. “It’s great to see the community come together.”
A Celebration of Art and Connection
Event attendee Juan Ahumada chose to get a tattoo during the celebration, sharing that he had previously been tattooed by artist Alex Avalos, who now works at Burning Bridges. Ahumada’s advice for those contemplating their first tattoo was straightforward: “Don’t overthink it. American traditional designs are timeless and worth considering.”
Victor Walker, a dedicated supporter of the local music scene since 2022, came to the event after learning about it through Dreamer A.M.’s Instagram page. .His advice for newcomers to the scene was to “immerse yourself in the music and enjoy meeting people.”
Technical Expertise Behind the Scenes
Collin Smith, owner of South Star Studios in Modesto and the event’s sound technician, ensured the bands’ performances ran smoothly. Smith’s involvement stemmed from his close connection with Burning Bridges, as his studio is located nearby.Chris Garcia of Remontant Press was another notable vendor at the event, showcasing his screen-printed artwork. Originally from Chicago, Garcia discovered his passion for screen printing as an undergraduate and draws inspiration from Japanese art and the art nouveau movement.The event successfully highlighted Modesto’s vibrant blend of art, music, and community, bringing together attendees, performers, and vendors for a night filled with celebration and connection.
