Dolly Parton has shared rare insights about her tattoos, revealing that she has “a few little” ones on her body. The iconic singer, known for hits like “Jolene,” previously disclosed that her tattoos are done in light-colored ink. Despite showing some skin during her performance at the Dallas Cowboys halftime show last Thanksgiving, her tattoos remained hidden.
In an interview with Hello! Magazine on Tuesday, October 29, Parton explained, “When I first started getting a few little things done, I had a few little tattoos to cover up some scarring. If I have to get a scar for any reason, I can never get rid of that purple look. So I thought, ‘I’m going to decorate these with some flowers or little butterflies or whatever.’”
At 78, Parton has seldom discussed her body art, leaving fans curious about her ink. In September 2020, she confirmed in an interview with People, “I do have some tattoos, that’s true. But they’re tasteful. I’m not a tattoo girl.”
She described her tattoos as “pretty” and “artful,” emphasizing that they were meant to cover scars rather than make bold statements. “Ribbons and bows and butterflies are the things that I have,” she noted. Parton revealed that after a serious illness requiring a feeding tube, she got a beehive tattoo to conceal an indentation left on her side, stating, “The mouth of it is that little sinkhole.”
When asked if she had her husband, Carl Thomas Dean, tattooed on her body, she playfully replied, “No, he’s tattooed on my heart.” She added, “Who knows, I may get some more later. I may just have to get covered with tattoos just so everybody could be right!”
In an interview with W Magazine in October 2021, she spoke about her affinity for butterflies. “They don’t sting, they don’t bite, and they are so beautiful,” she said, explaining that she identifies with them. “I have a few little tattoos here and there. Most of my tattoos came because I’m very fair and tend to scar easily. I’ve had surgeries, and if the scars didn’t heal properly, I just had to put tattoos to take the sting out. I don’t have the real heavy, dark tattoos. Mine are all pastel. And I have more than one!”
