As a global superstar, Taylor Swift often sets trends in various aspects of life, including fashion and beauty. While many fans, known as Swifties, might rush to get matching tattoos if she ever chose to get inked, Swift has made it clear that she has no plans to get a real tattoo.
In a 2012 interview with Taste of Country, Swift explained her reluctance towards permanent ink. When asked if she would consider getting a tattoo, she revealed, “I just … I don’t think I could ever commit. I don’t think I could ever commit to something permanent.” Instead of tattoos, she has a creative tradition during her Speak Now tour where she writes a new song lyric or quote on her arm for each performance. Sometimes, these lyrics are suggested by fans, adding a personal touch to her shows.
Although Swift has contemplated what she might get if she ever decided to go for it—specifically mentioning the number 13—she ultimately concluded, “I just, ugh—I don’t want to get a tattoo.”
While Taylor Swift may not have any real tattoos, she has embraced the use of temporary ones in her music videos. For instance, in the album art for her “Lover” single “You Need to Calm Down,” she sports a large back tattoo featuring a snake intertwined with colorful butterflies. This design is also featured in the corresponding music video, which marks a transition from her “Reputation” era to the “Lover” era. The video includes a playful moment where Ellen DeGeneres gets a fake tattoo with the words “Cruel Summer,” another track from Swift’s “Lover” album.
In the music video for “Fortnight,” the first single from her The Tortured Poets Department album, Swift even mimics Post Malone’s famous face tattoos, leading to speculation among fans about the meaning behind the imagery.
With her imaginative approach to music videos, it’s likely that fans will continue to see Swift adorned with fake tattoos. However, as of now, it seems she remains uninterested in getting any real ink.
