Folsom Tattoo Shop Earns Global Recognition from Inked Magazine

by Jessica

One of Folsom’s top tattoo shops, Shanghai Tattoo, has recently received a prestigious honor from Inked Magazine, one of the most renowned tattoo publications in the world. The shop was highlighted in an article titled “Bucket List Ink: Must-See Tattoo Shops Every Enthusiast Should Visit.” The article spotlights exceptional tattoo shops from global hotspots such as New York, Miami, and Great Britain, and now, Folsom has earned a place on this exclusive list.

Josh Thompson, co-owner of Shanghai Tattoo alongside his wife, the world-famous tattoo artist Zhuo Dan Ting (known as Ms. Ting), expressed their excitement over this recognition. “We’re very excited. Some of the shops featured are in Miami, New York City, or Los Angeles, and then you’ve got Folsom, California,” Thompson told The Folsom Telegraph. He emphasized the significance of the feature, explaining that the permanent link on Inked Magazine’s website offers lasting visibility compared to the more fleeting nature of social media posts.

As part of their creative outreach, on October 12th, Shanghai Tattoo hosted a Halloween-inspired art show, embracing their love for art and the Halloween season. The event, held in the art gallery on the shop’s ground floor, showcased a diverse array of local artists’ works, including paintings inspired by sci-fi horror classics like the Alien movie series, and unique ceramic pieces created by local artisans.

Thompson shared his enthusiasm for the collaboration, saying, “It’s super cool, we’re bringing in a bunch of artists from the Sacramento and Folsom area, different tattoo artists, different painters… so it’s a collaboration, not just our shop… everyone seems excited.”

The shop’s history is as rich as its artistry. Shanghai Tattoo was originally founded in 2007 in Shanghai, China, by Ms. Ting, a trailblazer in the tattoo industry. She earned the title “The First Lady of Tattoo” for her pioneering role as a female tattoo artist when the industry was still male-dominated, and for her remarkable skill in the craft.

In 2018, Shanghai Tattoo expanded to Folsom, and the shop quickly gained a reputation as one of the area’s top tattoo destinations. Earlier this year, they celebrated the opening of a new, two-story location at 305 Wool Street in Historic Folsom, cementing their place as a cornerstone of the local and international tattoo community. The shop is known for its diverse group of artists and also offers piercing services, further expanding its offerings to the community.

With the global recognition from Inked Magazine and a growing reputation for both its tattoo artistry and community engagement, Shanghai Tattoo continues to put Folsom on the map in the world of tattoos.
