Tattoo Shop in Downtown Grantville Receives Approval for Relocation

by Jessica

A downtown Grantville tattoo shop has secured the necessary special permit to move to a new location across the street after years of operating in its current space. Russell Knight, the shop owner, submitted his application for the permit in July, but city officials discovered that tattoo shops were not permitted under existing zoning laws.

To address this issue, the city held public hearings and amended the zoning regulations to allow tattoo shops in commercial-residential zones. Following months of review, the Grantville City Council unanimously approved the zoning change on Tuesday, granting Knight’s shop the required permit. The city’s Planning Commission had recommended the change, and there was no public opposition during the hearings.

In other council business, members discussed an upcoming public hearing scheduled for October 28 at 6:30 p.m. This hearing will focus on rezoning 96 acres on Grandma Branch Road from R20 residential to RS-15 single-family residential, which would enable the construction of 13 additional homes.

The council also approved several measures, including a 3-0 agreement to purchase supplemental power from the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia for city residents. They decided to replace paper copies of council agenda packets with electronic devices for members and updated the city’s fee schedule, increasing the cost of paper copies from 10 cents to 20 cents per page, with a 3-1 vote. Council member Dee Berry voted against this increase.

Additionally, a 4 percent cost-of-living adjustment (plus 50 cents per hour) was approved for City Manager Al Grieshaber, aligning his increase with those previously granted to other city staff. Berry also voted against this pay adjustment. During the meeting, resident Selma Coty suggested capping city employee salaries.

Kathy Crouch was appointed to the city’s Beautification Advisory Board with a 3-0 vote, and her term will end on December 31, 2025. Finally, the council approved a special event permit for the Grantville Police Department’s annual Fall Festival, set for Saturday, October 26, with Berry abstaining from the vote.
