Kim MacDonald, a veteran broadcaster with The Weather Network and a breast cancer survivor, recently spoke about her empowering tattoo during the 27th annual Luncheon of Hope fundraiser in Sudbury. Her tattoo, which covers her double mastectomy scar with vibrant sunflowers, has become a symbol of strength and resilience.
The image of MacDonald proudly displaying her tattoo has gained national attention, appearing in commercials, on buses, and even on a massive billboard in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square. During her keynote speech at the Luncheon of Hope on September 24, she shared her journey and the significance of her tattoo.
The event, organized by the Northern Cancer Foundation, has raised over $1.1 million for cancer care and research at the Shirley and Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre. This year, organizers aimed to raise an additional $60,000.
MacDonald underwent a double mastectomy in 2017, following her oncologist’s advice to wait three years before considering reconstructive surgery due to the aggressive nature of her cancer. Instead of opting for reconstruction, she chose to embrace her body as it was.
On the fifth anniversary of her surgery in 2022, she decided to transform her scars into artwork. “I wanted a tattoo of sunflowers, and so I got one,” she explained. “There’s a saying: ‘Be the sunflower, stand tall and follow the sun.’ That’s what I had been trying to do since my diagnosis.”
MacDonald expressed that the tattoo helped her feel beautiful, strong, and empowered. “There was something about this tattoo that made me feel beautiful and strong and a bit of a badass,” she said, emphasizing her journey of self-acceptance and transformation.
