Sydney – Two men, Christopher Carrig and Taylor Bayly, both 20, have appeared in court after being accused of spray-painting swastikas at Macquarie University. The pair was arrested in July and faces multiple charges, including property damage, related to the incident that occurred in the early hours of January 25, 2024.
Authorities allege that Carrig and Bayly disguised themselves by blackening their faces and vandalized 24 locations on the university grounds with offensive symbols. During their court appearance at Burwood Local Court, both men displayed matching tattoos of the numbers “14” and “88” behind their ears—symbols commonly associated with white supremacy, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
Police conducted a search at their home in Marsfield on July 2, reportedly uncovering items linked to extreme right-wing ideology. A few days later, on July 11, authorities discovered the bodies of a woman and a teenage girl at the same address, leading to a significant forensic investigation; however, there is no indication that Carrig or Bayly were involved in these deaths.
Additionally, Carrig faces separate charges for allegedly intimidating a 20-year-old man at a bus stop in May and for entering a Woolworths store at the Macquarie Centre shopping complex, despite being banned.
Both men’s cases have been adjourned until October 1, when they are expected to enter pleas to the charges.
