A recent incident at a popular bar and restaurant on the Gold Coast has reignited discussions about the establishment’s strict tattoo policy, prompting speculation about potential changes in the future.
Jaden Laing, adorned with tribal tattoos across his neck, chest, and back, attempted to enter Burleigh Pavilion over the weekend by concealing his ink with a black turtleneck sweater. However, security personnel were quick to notice his tattoos and, upon requesting him to reveal his neck, ultimately denied him entry.
Laing documented the encounter on his TikTok page, garnering over 40 million views and sparking debates over whether he should have been permitted entry.
Ben May, the owner of Burleigh Pavilion, addressed the situation, stating that while the policy regarding neck tattoos remains somewhat flexible, there may come a time when individuals like Jaden will be welcomed despite their ink.
“We maintain a policy against anything deemed intimidating, aggressive, or offensive, which we enforce rigorously to ensure the safety and comfort of our patrons,” May explained. “Since our establishment five years ago, this policy has evolved, and while it remains stringent, there may be occasions in the future where individuals like Jaden, who appear to be upstanding individuals, will be granted entry.”
May acknowledged that similar rules regarding tattoos exist at various venues across the Gold Coast, but emphasized that decisions are made on a case-by-case basis and are subject to change as societal attitudes towards tattoos continue to evolve.
“While there’s a growing acceptance of tattoos, particularly among younger generations, it’s important to recognize that some individuals, especially older demographics and children, may still perceive them as intimidating,” May added.
