One in Three Argentines Now Have Tattoos, With Women Leading the Trend

by Jessica

Tattoos, once associated with rebellion and marginality, have become a widely accepted form of self-expression in Argentina. What was once considered a symbol of defiance, often linked to prisoners or sailors, has evolved into a mainstream trend. A recent study conducted by the consultancy firm Voices! reveals that nearly a third of Argentines now sport at least one tattoo, and the popularity is growing, particularly among women.

According to Constanza Cilley, the executive behind the study, “Almost 30 percent of the more than 1,000 Argentines we surveyed reported having a tattoo.” Moreover, a significant number of those surveyed indicated plans to add more tattoos in the near future.

The survey highlighted that 31 percent of respondents have tattoos, with the highest concentrations found among women, individuals under 50, and people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Additionally, many tattooed individuals aren’t content with just one; seven out of ten people with tattoos have more than one design. The average age when individuals get their first tattoo is 24.

Gender differences in tattoo trends are also notable. While the likelihood of getting a tattoo is similar for both men and women after the age of 50, women dominate the tattoo scene among those under 50. Among women aged 25 to 49, 44 percent report having tattoos, a clear indication of the trend’s increasing popularity among females.

This phenomenon isn’t exclusive to Argentina. In Spain, the tattooed population is estimated to be between 15 and 20 percent, with women leading the trend there as well.

Tattooing is not only a common practice but a growing social trend. According to the Voices! study, 27 percent of Argentines are considering getting a tattoo in the next year, and another 18 percent are undecided but open to the idea. Notably, women aged 18 to 24 are at the forefront of this trend, with 50 percent expressing an intention to get a tattoo in the future. The survey, conducted online in January, collected responses from 1,027 individuals over 18 years old, ensuring a representative sample of the population.

Reasons for Getting a Tattoo

The study also explored the motivations behind getting tattoos. The top reasons cited were:

Homage to loved ones (26 percent)

Affective ties (25 percent) – shared designs with partners, friends, or family

Aesthetics (22 percent)

Memories and overcoming challenges (21 percent)

Support for tattoo artistry (20 percent)

Inspiration and motivation (15 percent) – including meaningful phrases or symbols.

Other reasons included curiosity, fashion trends, peer influence, and the desire to express religious or spiritual beliefs.

Social Perception of Tattoos

The study also examined how tattoos are perceived in Argentine society. The majority of respondents believe that having a tattoo does not negatively impact how others view them, with only 17 percent feeling that a visible tattoo creates a negative impression. This sentiment was particularly strong among those without tattoos and individuals from higher socio-economic groups.

Personal Reflections on Tattoos

Trinidad Romano, a tattoo enthusiast, shared her personal journey in an essay, describing her first tattoo at the age of 17. Initially motivated by the desire to get a tattoo just like her peers, Romano reflects on how her perspective evolved over time. What once seemed like a need to justify each design has now become a celebration of art, with each tattoo serving as a personal piece of her history.

Romano now views her body as a canvas, where each tattoo represents a different chapter of her life. “They represent joy, independence, freedom, and sometimes nostalgia,” she writes. For Romano, the meaning behind each tattoo has shifted from a desire for perfection to a simple recognition that they make her happy.

In conclusion, tattoos have evolved from symbols of rebellion to mainstream expressions of personal identity. With increasing numbers of Argentines – especially women – embracing the trend, the tattoo culture continues to flourish, offering a unique way to commemorate significant life moments.
