Concern Grows Over Unsafe Tattoo Removal Practices Using Cheap Equipment

by Jessica

A rise in tattoo removals has led to concerns about the use of unsafe, low-cost equipment that could cause serious harm, warns a Bristol-based tattoo artist and removal specialist.

Wayne Joyce, who runs Reset Room in Bristol, said he has observed an increase in clients experiencing permanent scarring and, in some cases, developing body dysmorphia — a mental health condition characterized by excessive worry about perceived flaws in one’s appearance.

Tattoo removal is typically carried out through methods like laser surgery, surgical excision, and dermabrasion. Joyce, however, is particularly concerned about the growing availability of substandard equipment that compromises both safety and effectiveness.

“The main issue in the industry right now is the accessibility of equipment that doesn’t perform properly,” said Joyce. “It can remove tattoos, but the resulting skin damage can leave clients in a far worse condition than before.”

Scarring is a common risk with most tattoo removal methods, but the procedure can also lead to infections and skin discoloration.

Joyce explained that some individuals are obtaining inexpensive, faulty lasers and using them in unsanitary conditions, often offering home-based removal services. These unregulated providers, he warned, are not qualified and may lack the necessary training and licenses to perform safe tattoo removal.

“There is a stark contrast between professionals who have received proper training and obtained a licensed tattoo removal certification from local authorities, and unqualified individuals using cheap lasers in unsanitary environments,” Joyce said. “People are even using at-home hair removal devices, which is extremely risky.”

Local authorities enforce regulations that require certified clinics to obtain specific licenses for tattoo removal, ensuring a safer and more controlled environment for clients.

While tattoo removal is generally privately funded, it can also be accessed through the NHS in some cases, either as a self-funded treatment or through referral.

The cost of tattoo removal can be substantial, often exceeding the original price of the tattoo itself. “You’re looking at several hundred pounds for smaller tattoos, and for larger pieces like sleeves or back tattoos, the cost can run into the thousands,” Joyce explained.

Though tattoo removal technology has improved significantly in the past decade, Joyce cautioned that the process can be lengthy, often taking a year or more to achieve complete removal, depending on the tattoo’s size and complexity.

Despite the risks, many individuals are opting for tattoo removal, including Jade James, who is undergoing the procedure to remove a tattoo on her arm before her wedding in May. She expressed hope that the removal would help her regain the confidence she desires for her big day.

As demand for tattoo removal continues to rise, Joyce urges consumers to be cautious and ensure they are seeking professional services from licensed clinics to avoid irreversible damage.
