Toys for Tats Brings Holiday Cheer to St. Charles

by Jessica

What started as a simple idea has transformed into a beloved holiday tradition in St. Charles County. Permanent Vacation Tattoo, a well-known tattoo shop in the area, hosted its annual “Toys for Tats” giveaway on Saturday morning, drawing a crowd of hundreds eager to participate in the heartwarming event.

The premise behind “Toys for Tats” is straightforward: bring a toy valued at $50 or more, and in exchange, receive a free tattoo. Over the years, this community-centered event has gained momentum, with more and more people lining up each year to contribute and celebrate the season of giving.

Madelyn King, a longtime St. Charles resident, was the first person in line for this year’s event. Arriving late Friday night, she camped out in front of the shop to ensure she would be among the first to receive a tattoo. “Last year, the line wrapped all the way around the building,” King recalled. “It’s kind of nice to be right in the door this time. Every child deserves a magical Christmas, and that’s why I come.”

Permanent Vacation Tattoo owner Joe Cumbee said the event has expanded significantly since its inception, with artists traveling from across the region to participate. “We’ll have probably around 25 tattoo artists working at the same time,” Cumbee noted. “If you’re fortunate enough to be in a position to give, it’s the least you can do.”

The event is not just about tattoos, though—it’s about giving back to the community. All toys collected during the giveaway are distributed locally, ensuring they benefit children in need. The shop partners with Central County Fire and Rescue and the Foster Adoption Support Team to ensure the donations reach their intended recipients.

Fire Captain Matt Conoyer, who has been involved in the event for several years, spoke about the positive impact “Toys for Tats” has on the community. “It’s kind of become its own holiday tradition,” Conoyer said. “It’s great because it directly benefits the people here in St. Charles, and it really brings the community together.”

This year’s event saw an outpouring of generosity, with hundreds of toys donated and distributed to local children, making the holiday season a little brighter for families in need. What started as a small idea has turned into a heartwarming example of how community members can come together to spread joy and kindness.

The success of “Toys for Tats” is a reminder of the power of giving, not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year. It’s a tradition that continues to grow, bringing people together to create lasting memories and support those who need it most.
