A Glasgow tattoo studio is playing a pivotal role in supporting the care of neglected and abandoned farm animals, by donating 100% of its profits to Tribe Animal Sanctuary, a local rescue center dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals in need. Tribe Tattoo Studio, located in Glasgow’s West End and Edinburgh, has become a vital source of funding for the sanctuary, which is home to over 120 animals, including sheep, pigs, goats, chickens, and donkeys.
Founded by tattoo artist and passionate animal lover Morag Sangster in 2017, Tribe Animal Sanctuary has helped countless animals who were surrendered, abandoned, or subjected to mistreatment. These animals, many of whom arrive in critical condition, are given a second chance at life, thanks to the combined efforts of the sanctuary and the funds generated through Tribe Tattoo Studio.
One such success story is Clover, a lamb discovered in a severely injured state. When Clover was found by a group of dog walkers, she was in desperate condition, with a broken leg, pecked-out eyes, and maggots eating at her wounds. The farmer who owned her had intended to leave her to die. Thankfully, the dog walkers stepped in, requesting the farmer’s permission to take Clover to a safe place. They brought her to Tribe Animal Sanctuary, where she received the medical attention she urgently needed. After months of care, Clover is now healthy and happy, despite having lost one eye and still sometimes bumping into things. She has formed a bond with a three-legged sheep at the sanctuary and is now a lively, beloved part of the animal family.
Sangster, who also opened Tribe Tattoo Studio on Bank Street in 2000, explained that creating the sanctuary for farm animals had always been her life’s ambition. “It’s incredibly rewarding to see these animals, who might have otherwise been euthanized or left to perish, now living happily and healthily. They all have personalities, just like pets—they have quirks, emotions, and a desire to live,” Sangster said. “Our goats are mischievous and hilarious, our pigs are affectionate, and our sheep are full of character.”
The sanctuary operates solely on donations and the profits from the tattoo studio, which cover veterinary bills, food, and other essential costs. Vet bills can be extremely high, especially when dealing with the aftermath of severe injuries or neglect, and as operating costs continue to rise, the sanctuary relies heavily on the support of the local community and Tribe Tattoo Studio’s customers. Sangster described the work at the sanctuary as more than a full-time job, calling it both physically demanding and mentally taxing. “It’s a 24/7 commitment. Every day is filled with challenges, from caring for the animals to ensuring there are enough funds to meet their needs. But when you see these animals thrive, it makes everything worth it.”
Tribe Animal Sanctuary is committed to never euthanizing healthy animals, regardless of the circumstances, and strives to provide them with a safe, nurturing environment for the rest of their lives. Despite the financial challenges, the sanctuary continues to rescue and rehabilitate animals, thanks to the generosity of donors and the selfless efforts of the team at Tribe Tattoo Studio. The sanctuary’s work highlights the powerful bond between animals and humans, proving that compassion and care can make all the difference in an animal’s life.
