Many sports fans make bold promises when hoping for their team to achieve an unlikely goal, often expecting those hopes to fall short. For Sacramento Kings supporter Bradley Dorward, this situation played out a bit differently.
On July 5, Dorward took to social media, posting on X (formerly Twitter), with a playful but bold pledge. He wrote that if six-time NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozan signed with the Kings, he would get the player’s name tattooed on his body. At the time, it seemed like an improbable scenario.
“If DeMar DeRozan picks the Kings, I will get his name tattoo’d somewhere on my body,” Dorward tweeted.
However, the unexpected became reality when DeRozan did, in fact, sign with the Sacramento Kings. The star forward agreed to a three-year, $76 million contract via a sign-and-trade, leaving Dorward with a promise to fulfill.
While some might shy away from such a commitment, Dorward stayed true to his word. He got DeRozan’s name inked on his body, catching the attention of the basketball star himself. Upon hearing of the fan’s dedication, DeRozan was eager to meet him.
“Please tell him I’d like to meet him, alright?” DeRozan said during an interview following his signing.
Both fan and player followed through. Before the Kings’ preseason game at Golden 1 Center, Dorward had the chance to meet DeRozan, as documented by the Kings on X. The fan proudly showed off his new tattoo and even got a photo with the NBA star.
“We did it,” Dorward said, still visibly excited from the encounter. “I was shaking the whole time.”
Given the success of this social media-driven moment, it wouldn’t be surprising if Dorward takes it a step further. Perhaps he’ll promise to get a tattoo of the Larry O’Brien Trophy if the Kings go on to win an NBA championship.
After all, it certainly wouldn’t hurt to try.
